Uploading products manually on Magento is an inconvenient task and takes a lot of time. It is rather annoying to add each product in the admin panel after installing Magento. Adding all the products one by one can be time consuming when you have hundreds or thousands of products. In such cases you need an automatic method or something that does really well with uploading thousands of products. Though there are many ways to upload products to Magento but one of the easiest ways is to upload with a product CSV/Excel file. You can do it through the standard import feature, the data profiles feature, or install the Magmi Magento extension that adds more product data import functionality. Before uploading any product you must understand how the product, category, and attribute data works within Magento. Here are a few steps that will take you in order to understand how to upload products on Magento.
First, access your Magento administrator backend and go to Catalog -> Manage Categories.
Create all product categories you will need. You can do so by filling the form displayed below:
At this point you should surely note down all the newly created ids that have to be imported. It would be great if you can save them in a notepad so that you can simply use this file while importing. Once you will save the category, the category ID will be shown. You can note as shown below –
If you wish to have additional attributes for the products that you want to import you will have to create those via Catalog ->Attributes ->Manage Attributes -> Add New Attribute.
Once you will create the new product it will immediately appear in the list of products in your Magento store.
Now it is ready for making the sample export to use as a template. In the Magento administrator area go to System -> Import/Export -> Dataflow – Profiles -> Export All Products. Under profile information section you have to choose the targeted store to import the products. Once you are done with importing products you need to click on the drop down menu under the data transfer section and choose the Local/Remote Server. Also you need to make sure that the CSV / Tab Separated option is selected for ‘type’ and click Save Profile under the ‘data format’ option. Then click ‘export all products’ again and click Run Profile in the Popup.
It will save a file named “export_all_products.csv” under the var/export/ directory for your Magento installation.
Now get logged in to your FTP and download this file to your local computer. Open it in any program like MS Excel/Openoffice and add the products you wish to import. This file will consist of columns for each of the attributes that you have defined for all products. Don’t forget to add category IDs that you have saved earlier in a separate file. Once you are down with this, go back to the admin panel and choose System -> Import/Export -> Dataflow – Profiles -> Import All Products.
Once the import process is done you will see this message on your screen.
Now you can again go back to the admin panel and check all the imported products that have been assigned to their categories and attributes.
