7 Awesome Resources to Test Cross Browser Compatibility of Your Website

admin on Aug 19th 2009 with 56 comments

When there are many browsers available for the users to surf the internet, it becomes evident for you to check the Cross Browser Compatibility of your website. Different people use different operating systems and browsers and you cannot control their wish to surf your website on one particular browser, just because your website does not look well on it. Though among many available browsers, Mozilla and I.E are the most used browsers around the world. But still while designing a website web designers make it sure to check the browser compatibility of the website in all browsers.

To rescue the web designers from this aching job of testing browser compatibility in different browsers there are few websites which offer this service. On these websites you can check the compatibility of your website in all desired browsers. You can find these websites below:

1- Browsershots

browsershots

2- Browsercamp

3- Xenocode Browser Sandbox

4-CrossBrowserTesting

5-NetRenderer

6-Litmus

7-IETester

All these are pretty much web services save for IETester, I wished they had an application on a Mac which can emulate the different browsers’ behavior. While on IETester, I would like to recommend IE Collections (only for Windows). They contain standalone versions of IE.

Great collection. Thanks for posting. I’ve used Browser Shots and found it to be very quick and easy to use. I’ll check some of these others out.

Most of these tools on your list are very good at letting users see what a web site looks like in different browsers. A more challenging goal in testing web apps is to test out functionality in different browsers and asnwer questions like: “If I’m using Google Chrome, will the change credit card feature work at the very end of the purchasing process on Expedia?” (My recent experience suggests the answer is unfortunately no, but I digress).

Shameless plug for a related test design tool to help in cross browser testing of web apps: I have created a tool that will help testers identify a small subset of test cases that can be run on different internet browsers. It is the Hexawise test design tool. It is starting to receive some pretty encouraging feedback from early users. As shown in one of the sample test plans included in the tool, for example, it will help users identify 35 test cases to be executed in 6 different browsers (down from 72 billion possible use case scenarios) that would be very effective at finding defects in the Google Maps get directions web app, for example. The tool automatically selects the minimum number of test cases that would be required to match (among other things) every single browser type tested against every single function tested (e.g,. get driving directions or get walking directions or “zoom in all the way” or “show photos” or “drag the blue line marking the route” etc.)

It is a new tool, offered as a software as a service. We have both a permanently free version as well as a reasonably-priced commercial version. For now, we’re making even the fully-featured commercial version freely available to help encourage adoption. Similar tools are offered for licensing packages starting at $6,000. All I’d ask is that if you like it, that you tell your friends about your experience or consider posting a tweet or a quick blog post. If not, I’d welcome your suggestions on how to improve it. / End of plug.

Cloud Testing – http://www.cloudtesting.com/ – offer a functional website testing and cross browser testing service that allows you to test your websites from the cloud.

Enterprise users can download an agent which allows access to your local resources, i.e. inside your firewall/network.

It is based on Selenium, and allows you to capture scripts in the Selenium IDE plugin for Firefox, and then upload onto our servers for running.

We currently support the following browsers:

Firefox 2, 3 & 3.5
Internet Explorer 6,7 & 8
Safari 3.2 & 4.0
Chrome 2 and 3
Opera 9.6 and 10.0

With all of the above we capture full screenshots (i.e. of the browser window, not just the OS window), store the HTML and details of components on each page, along with timings and HTTP request and response headers. All of this is available to view via the results portal – http://portal.cloudtesting.com/

A free 7 day trial is available – http://www.cloudtesting.com/free_trial.php

We use Crossbrowsertesting.com religiously. We have found that having a live connection to a site is more informative then a screen grab. You can’t proof functionality from a screen grab. It also allows you to test all of the different browsers not just IE. It does have a free option which the only draw back is a waiting list when you need to log into a server. The free option also doesnt have VPN which makes it much faster and easier to use in the paid version. There are ways around this depending on time of day. Their paid service equates to about $1.00 per minute give or take.

I am using Sun’s free VirtualBox with the Windows 7 RC on my iMac, so a years worth of free checking of windows browsers within my machine.

Ideally I will purchase VMWare, as its software is a more polished product, but you can’t fault Sun’s free version with the free Windows 7 for testing for now with no purchases involved. :o )

I always use IETester but unfortunately after I upgraded to Windows7 it doesn’t work like it used to. I dual boot with Vista and so I have to log out and back in again in order to use it.

Thanks for the list. I’ve used Browser Camp for Mac/Safari emulation and found it can be a little bit slow and also had some trouble with the keyboard layout on the virtual server not matching my own.
Also used IEtester and found it to be a little bit inaccurate. Microsoft offer expression web preview as a snap-shot style tester for previous IE versions.

That’s a great collection of browser testing tools. I only had Browsercam as another one, which is similar to Browsershots but I think that Xenocode is the best overall.

You may want to take a look at this new browser screenshot application – http://www.browserseal.com

Currently it only supports Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on Windows, but as it is being actively developed more features and additional browsers will be added in the future.

Free beta version can be downloaded from http://www.browserseal.com

I just tried out NetRenderer and it really helped out on a cross-browser issue I was having with IE. The notorious Internet Explorer… when will Microsoft finally update their outdated browser!

Great article. I used to use browsershots in the past. The biggest issue is that it is very slow. I recently came across cross-browser (http://cross-browser.appspot.com) – an app that runs on Google app engine. I liked it because it was fast (I was able to test 7 browsers in under 30 seconds) and did not bug me with signing-up, giving my email address etc.,
